While this interest developed early and was always present, it wasn’t until Avery was attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for a degree in music performance that they considered making flying a career. Some careful research and one discovery flight later, the decision to fly was made. After graduating from UNCG and starting flight training, Avery also began working for iAero Airways, first as a crew scheduler and then later as an FAA certificated aircraft dispatcher, staying with the charter airline until the company ceased operations in 2024. Aviation was always part of her childhood and life, as her father was a former crop duster and Piedmont Airlines captain. However, Kathryn sought another form of horsepower, competing as an equestrian and managing horse barns. But a flight lesson during her senior year at Clemson University changed her career path forever. Kathryn earned her CFI, CFII, and Multi-Engine rating and went to work as a full-time flight instructor shortly after. Within the next two years, she became a Gold Seal Flight Instructor and earned her ATP rating. While instructing, Kathryn also flew pilot-in-command and second-in-command for a Part 135 operation. She soon joined Continental Airlines, where she remained for four years before leaving to put children and family in priority. The lure of the skies was too much, and Kathryn reinstated her Gold Seal CFII and joined the Elon Aviation team. His mother says his first word spoken was "airplane." During his childhood, Joseph and his parents frequented the local airport to watch planes take off and land. His experience flying a plane at aviation camp when he was 14 sealed his fate: He would pursue an aviation career. Joseph majored in Aeronautical Studies at Kent State University in Ohio and flew all over Ohio whenever he wasn't in the classroom. After graduating, he worked as a line service technician before pursuing his Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate. Not only did he earn his A&P from National Aviation Academy in Clearwater, Fla., but he also obtained his FCC license for avionics. During his early days as a mechanic, Joseph worked on Boeing 737s and KC-10 military aircraft. When Elon Aviation needed an A&P, he was more than willing to take on the task and has since earned his Inspection Authorization (IA) certificate.
