Traditions and Milestones in Flight Training
The first solo is steeped in history. Years ago, flight instructors rode behind their students and would tug on the student's shirttail to get their attention. According to tradition, cutting off the shirttail symbolizes the instructor's confidence that the student can fly solo.
Another major aviation accomplishment is the checkride, or FAA practical exam. During the checkride, a pilot demonstrates to an FAA-appointed examiner that they are qualified for the certificate or rating they seek.
